Personally, I think it’s a shame that the statues were vandalized because 1–it didn’t achieve anything and 2–it wasn’t their place to destroy them. Once historical places, monuments, signs, statues, etc are destroyed, we can never replace them. As a society, I like to think we are more aware and sensitive to issues that we weren’t in the past but that doesn’t give us the right to destroy it if we don’t agree with what it symbolizes. Move it, YES, replace it with something else, sure, but destroy it, no. If anything, they are symbols of what things were once like, how far we’ve come and how much farther we have to go.
